About DAN

Welcome to the Department of Anthropology at the University of Brasilia (DAN/UnB). The DAN is home to a dynamic, pluralistic and inclusive community of researchers, students and teachers with a long tradition of excellence in anthropology in Brazil. 

With a history dating back to the founding of UnB in 1960, DAN has been home to a well-established Postgraduate Program in Social Anthropology for 50 years - with top marks from CAPES in every evaluation cycle - and offers, together with the departments of Sociology and Latin American Studies, a bachelor's degree and an undergraduate degree in social sciences.

The DAN currently offers a unique infrastructure for this research and dialogue community, with individual teaching offices, individual workstations for postgraduate students, 11 research laboratories in various areas of anthropology, a laboratory for imaging and recording social interactions and one of the best and most up-to-date anthropology bibliographic collections in the country.

In addition to the physical space and equipment, there is a dynamic routine of seminars and events (monthly departmental seminars and frequent thematic seminars in the laboratories), scientific publications (including the pioneering Anthropological Yearbook) and support for research through scholarships and various grants.

The result of this special combination of quality teaching and research, highly qualified teaching staff with a high level of intellectual production and good quality physical infrastructure could only be a well-trained student body that has won the country's main scientific prizes.
